Janet Cordell cannot remember a time when woodcarving and art were not central factors in her life, or did not permeate every house she  lived in. She has always been heavily involved with woodcarving and has never worked in any other field than art. Janet grew up deep in the Boston Mountain Range of the Ozarks, as the second daughter of the well-known Denton family of woodcarvers. The art of the Dentons has been featured many times over the years, from articles in magazines such as National Geographic and woodcarving journals, to newspapers and television documentaries.

Janet has been carving for forty three years, and has been recognized as a master artisan by the state of Arkansas' apprenticeship program. She has won the Arkansas Governor's Award and numerous awards at woodcarving shows and art competitions around the United States. Her style clearly reflects her upbringing in the woods and close to nature, and combines it with a love of classical art.

Janet has also been teaching woodcarving since 1986, and in 1994 opened her own school of wood sculpture. The Ozark Mountain School of Sculpture is currently housed in a log cabin on the family property, where the quiet, undisturbed atmosphere and close proximity to nature foster creativity. Students at all levels of sculpture are welcome in the classes.
